Power Electronic Engineer

Joplin, Missouri
Are you a seasoned Power Electronics Engineer looking to lead cutting-edge innovations in high-power DC-DC conversion and high-current relay design? Join our dynamic team, where your expertise will drive the future of advanced battery electronics systems for mission-critical applications. If you're passionate about solving complex challenges in harsh environments and mentoring the next generation of engineers, this role offers the perfect opportunity to make a significant impact!

Power Electronics Engineer - Manufacturing
Senior Power Electronics Engineer leads the design and maintenance of electronic systems across various products, with a focus on power conversion and solid-state relays. This role is primarily responsible for designing DC power electronics, with occasional work on AC systems, to manage battery charging, regulate voltage during battery discharge, and implement safety disconnects to prevent charging or discharging under load. Additional responsibilities may include contributing to the design of other battery-related systems, such as telemetry, cell balancing, and safety disconnects.
The position also plays a key role in supporting the Engineering Manager by training, mentoring, and guiding junior engineers, as well as providing technical leadership on projects. Our products encompass a wide range of custom battery assemblies, which include Battery Management Systems (BMS), battery cells, electronic circuits, electrical connections, and mechanical/thermal structures.
Functions of the Power Electronics Engineer
  • Identify and delegate technical objectives and tasks to team engineers.
  • Provide mentorship, training, and guidance to junior engineers.
  • Collaborate with various functional groups and management to ensure project goals are met.
  • Interpret and manage customer and internal requirements for the design, testing, deployment, and support of compliant battery electronics systems.
  • Design, modify, and integrate DC-DC power converters of various topologies and power levels (up to 100kW) for battery charge control, balancing, and discharge voltage regulation.
  • Design, modify, and integrate solid-state relays capable of handling and interrupting currents up to 1000A.
  • Conduct circuit design, analysis, simulation, and PCB layout based on customer requirements for use in harsh environments such as vibration, shock, thermal cycling, humidity, corrosive atmospheres, and radiation.
  • Perform design verification testing on PCB prototypes, document results, and iterate on designs as needed.
  • Design measurement circuits, analog signal conditioning, and A/D conversion for monitoring battery parameters like voltage, current, temperature, and time.
  • Design and manage high-current paths ranging from tens to hundreds of amperes for both battery charge and discharge operations.
  • Lead parts selection, screening, testing, and cost estimation in military/aerospace environments, ensuring compliance with stringent military and space component standards.
  • Generate and maintain electronics engineering deliverables including drawings, PCB manufacturing data packages, compliance/verification matrices, FMEAs, test reports, de-rating analyses, parts stress analyses, current distribution analyses, and reliability/MTBF analyses.
  • Conduct root cause analysis and implement corrective actions for technical design, manufacturing, testing, and performance issues.
  • Maintain product-focused ERP system data such as inventory part records and product structures (BOMs).
  • Provide hardware support, including troubleshooting, selecting alternative components, qualification testing, documentation updates, and other hardware-related tasks.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations to peers, management, and external customers, both in written and oral formats.
  • Participate in reviewing and preparing proposals as needed.

Experience Requirements
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electronics Engineering or a related field is required.
  • Minimum of 10 years of combined work experience or hands-on graduate experience in power electronics is required.
  • Experience in designing high-power DC-DC converters is required.
  • Experience with high-current solid-state relay design is required.
  • Proven experience in leading, training, and mentoring engineers is required.
  • Experience in AC-DC power conversion is preferred.
  • Knowledge of analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog conversion is preferred.
  • Experience in precision voltage and current measurement is preferred.
  • Proficiency in schematic capture, circuit simulation, and PCB layout is required; experience with Altium is preferred.
  • Embedded controller design and software/firmware programming experience are preferred.
  • Experience designing for high-reliability harsh environments is preferred.
  • Familiarity with AS9100, ISO9001, DoD, NASA, and IPC standards and quality requirements are preferred.
  • Experience in developing and maintaining Engineering and Production documentation is required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office for data analysis, reduction, and presentation is required.
  • A demonstrated self-starter with a schedule-driven mindset is required.
  • Strong attention to detail, with accuracy and completeness of information, is required.
