Job Title: CNC Tech Manager - Machine Shop Startup
Job Summary:
The CNC Tech Manager will be responsible for setting up and managing a CNC machine shop from the ground up. This role requires an individual with extensive knowledge of CNC machines, including programming, operation, and maintenance, as well as experience in managing a shop, hiring staff, and ensuring productivity. The ideal candidate will be hands-on initially, running machines and consulting on equipment purchases, with the long-term goal of building a team and streamlining operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Shop Setup and Operations:
- Lead the establishment of a new CNC machine shop, including layout, equipment setup, and process design.
- Run CNC machines during the startup phase to maintain production until additional staff is hired.
- Consult with ownership on the acquisition of new machines and technology, with a focus on Haas machines.
- Oversee the implementation of tooling, fixturing, and set-ups for various machining operations.
- Team Building:
- Hire, train, and manage a team of CNC machinists and technicians as the shop grows.
- Develop clear job descriptions, interview candidates, and manage onboarding processes.
- Manage personnel decisions, including hiring, performance reviews, and, if necessary, firing.
- CNC Programming and Operation:
- Program and operate CNC machines using G-code and CAD software such as Autodesk Inventor.
- Set up machines for production, ensuring proper calibration, fixturing, and tool selection.
- Troubleshoot and optimize machining processes to ensure accuracy and productivity.
- Process Improvement and Productivity:
- Develop and implement strategies for improving shop productivity and efficiency.
- Monitor shop floor performance and implement changes to optimize throughput and reduce downtime.
- Set clear goals for production and establish key performance indicators (KPIs) to track progress.
- Collaboration and Communication:
- Work closely with ownership to ensure alignment on business goals, machine acquisitions, and staffing needs.
- Provide regular updates on production, staffing, and operational efficiency.
- Foster a non-abrasive, team-oriented environment, ensuring good communication and conflict resolution within the shop.
Qualifications:
- Extensive experience with CNC machines, especially Haas machines.
- Proficient in G-code programming and Autodesk Inventor.
- Strong understanding of fixturing, setup, and tool management in a production environment.
- Demonstrated leadership and management skills, with experience in hiring, training, and firing staff.
- Excellent organizational and time-management abilities.
- Non-abrasive personality with strong interpersonal skills and a collaborative attitude.
- Proven vision for improving productivity and operational efficiency in a CNC environment.
- Hands-on experience running machines and troubleshooting during the initial startup phase.
Compensation and Benefits:
- Salary: $110,000 - $125,000 per year (based on experience).
