Director of Museum

Atchison, KS

We are seeking a dynamic and hands-on Director of Operations to lead the day-to-day management and growth of our museum. This is a highly visible leadership role reporting directly to the Board of Trustees, responsible for overseeing operations, staff, programming, and community engagement.

This position is ideal for someone who enjoys wearing multiple hats—combining leadership, education, operations, and creativity to enhance the overall visitor experience and advance the museum’s mission.


What You’ll Do

Lead Daily Operations

  • Oversee all museum operations, ensuring a welcoming and engaging experience for visitors
  • Maintain accurate records and prepare reports for the Board of Trustees (admissions, revenue, donations, activities)
  • Manage financial tracking including expenses, income, and deposits

Manage Gift Shop & Revenue Streams

  • Oversee gift shop operations including inventory, purchasing, merchandising, and budgeting
  • Manage online orders and product curation
  • Track and report on retail performance

Drive Programming & Community Engagement

  • Lead educational programs including tours, field trips, group visits, and special events
  • Represent the museum within the community and at local events
  • Collaborate with local organizations and committees

Lead & Develop Team

  • Supervise staff, volunteers, and interns
  • Oversee hiring, training, scheduling, and performance
  • Foster a positive and engaging team environment

Marketing & Communications

  • Manage and grow social media presence (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn)
  • Create and design promotional materials, signage, and event graphics
  • Maintain and update the museum website

Fundraising & Development

  • Lead fundraising initiatives and donor engagement efforts
  • Manage grant applications and reporting
  • Support donor recognition efforts (including plaques and acknowledgments)

Collections & Facility Oversight

  • Support proper handling and care of museum artifacts
  • Ensure the museum remains clean, organized, and well-presented
  • Coordinate with external vendors as needed

What We’re Looking For

  • Bachelor’s degree in Museum Studies, Business, or related field (Master’s preferred)
  • 3–5+ years of nonprofit or operational leadership experience
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
  • Experience managing budgets, reporting, and financial tracking
  • Familiarity with museum operations and educational programming
  • Experience with social media management and graphic design tools
  • Background in fundraising and/or grant writing
